Best TLD for my business, or what domain extension do I identify with?

As a small business owner, you post regularly on social media, to sell more custom candles. Your competitors do the same; however, you notice they also have websites that are found in Google searches. Your social media page has never shown up in a Google search. Therefore, you decide you need a website too.  You wonder what is the best TLD for my business, as the domain extensions used by your competitors are all different.

TLDs are legal extensions such as .com and .org that are used to categorize domains.  Today, there are 1,200+ TLDs to choose from.  When I registered our domain, twenty years ago, I only had six options to consider, as that was all that was available to find the best TLD for my business. Finding the answer to what domain extension do I identify with, may require a bit of research.

As you do research for your website name:

Consider the extension or the ending of the domain address. Dundee.net is a network, not an organization (.org), but it is a company (.co), and business (.biz). The new extensions allow a business to use its name even if it’s already taken.  If you want www.kitadoghouse.com but someone already has it, you can use (.co), (. store), (.biz), or (.pet), to name a few alternatives.

The original (.com) continues to be the most popular.  If the .com is available, consider getting it as your first choice.  Also, you can purchase more than one extension for the same domain name.  For example, we own the (.net), and (.org) for https://mailinglistservices , both forward to https://mailinglistservices.com

The extension can identify the features of a website, including the owner, its purpose and in some cases geographical location. It does not affect the website’s rank in Google or other search engines.  On the other hand, it can impact the customer’s opinion of the website.  That is why the .com is important to have, if available.

The (.com) establishes trust, it’s known, and most brand names use a (.com) address.  The majority of internet users place a (.com) after an address by habit. In fact, some believe they must have a (.com) regardless of the new TLD’s available to them.
